The KICS hosts two different field trip seasons. The Spring field trip season begins in the middle of April and continues through to the end of the school year in June. The spring season gives priority to teachers and students’ participating in the Stream to Sea program as this field trip provides the participants the opportunity to release the much loved salmon that they have been rearing in classroom incubators back into the natural world. The extension education programming offered during this season usually includes an interactive aquatic invertebrate station, a forest walk learning about local plant species, information about local first nations and/or a watershed model displaying the importance of maintaining clean water.
All of the programs are hands-on and are able to be adjusted to meet the needs of the different age groups and/or the different audiences.
The fall field trip component occurs during that last week of September and into the first 3 weeks of October. This field trip offers viewing opportunities of the returning adult salmon and the participants are able to witness first-hand the wonders of salmon in the wild. These field trips are booked on a first-come, first-serve basis and have limited space available. The programming will include First Nations traditional fishing methods and techniques, salmon life-cycle, potentially a fish dissection and a nature walk.
Please contact us if you would like more information about field trips.
